GINA VILLALOBOS Rock 'N' Roll Pony Laughing Outlaw Records Country rock is in good hands with singers like Los Angeles-born Gina Villalobos. After a sleepy, pedal steel wrought opener called 'California', Gina swings into rockier, lyric driven, open faced, straight eyed, lightly worked rock, and that's where the album largely remains. This music is unapologetic, but still has a big gutsy stamp of honesty about it. Gina Villalobos has that elusive quality called credibility, built on some damn interesting lyric content and no nonsense guitar driven rock. Sometimes it's basic stuff - "I like your hands, let's start fooling around" - but in Gina's voice, with a rather rocky backing, it just sounds so natural. 4 FLIES Steve Baker Steve Baker |
