dingen. Daarop profileert ze zich immers zo’n beetje als een soort
van vrouwelijk antwoord op Ryan Adams. In haar platenkast staan evenwel
naast albums van Whiskeytown en de man zelf vrijwel met zekerheid ook
wat spullen van de Stones en Lucinda. Zou ons alvast in het geheel niet
verwonderen.
Eén beluistering van dit zelf geproduceerde en ook grotendeels
zelf bij elkaar gepende geheel volstonden alvast om ons als fan aan
haar te binden. Heel wat van de liedjes hier vallen dan ook onder de
noemer (erg) radiovriendelijke alt. country. Dat geldt zeer zeker voor
de door de gitaren van Villalobos zelf en Kevin Haaland en de pedal
steel van Sean Caffey sonisch prachtig ingekleurde melancholische opener
“California”. Maar ook het met (opvallend onopvallende)
banjobijdragen van collega rijzende ster Anne McCue opgeluisterde tweetal
(met hoge meezingbaarheidsfactor) “What I’d Give”
en “I’m Alright”, een knappe Americana-versie van
World Party’s “Put The Message In The Box”, het weemoedige
“So Much For Dying” en het bedaard rockende “Can’t
Come Down” – met van die heerlijk rinkelende gitaartjes
erin – schreeuwen als het ware om wat erkenning.
Een stuk pittiger kan het echter allemaal ook. Dat bewijst Villalobos
als ze lekker hees uithaalt in flink rockende tracks als “Why”
en “Fooling Around”. “En hoe zit dat dan met die verwijzing
naar Lucinda Williams?”, horen we je hardop denken. Daarvoor moet
je in het met gevoelige Wurlitzer-accentjes van Ben Pringle versierde
“We Got It Slow” of in het volledig akoestische –
enkel stem plus gitaar – “Trying To Find You” zijn.
Die liedjes completeren het hoogst fascinerende beeld dat Villalobos
van zichzelf ophangt op deze opvolger van haar in 2002 verschenen debuut
“Beg For Me”. In onze ogen een plaat die het ten volle verdient
om ook in de Lage Landen snel een geïnteresseerde verdeler te vinden.
